K. Shawn McCoy

Shawn McCoy began his career at MetLife in the early 1990s, where he worked directly with federal employees navigating retirement decisions. That front-line experience exposed him to a gap that has never fully closed: financial professionals are rarely trained for the federal benefits system, and the federal employees who need them most often end up working with advisors who don't understand FERS, TSP, FEHB, or FEGLI well enough to help.

Over the next two decades, Shawn held roles spanning group sales, management, compliance, and wholesaling — building a broad picture of how financial services institutions approach (and largely under-serve) the federal market. He held Series 7, 63, 24, and 65 licenses and worked with agencies, HR offices, and individual clients across the country.

Fifteen years ago Shawn made the federal benefits classroom his primary focus. Since then he has conducted more than 38,000 individual federal employee workshops — on-site at agencies, at union halls, in community centers, and online. He has personally guided federal workers through some of the most consequential financial decisions of their lives: survivor benefit elections, FEHB-to-Medicare transitions, FERS supplement timing, and TSP withdrawal sequencing.
