The designation
Registered Federal Benefits Specialist℠
The RFBS℠ is a post-nominal designation that signals to federal employees — and the agencies that serve them — that you have done the work to genuinely understand their benefits world.
What the RFBS℠ means
A credential built for the federal market.
The CFP® curriculum covers roughly four pages on federal retirement. The RFBS℠ requires mastery of the entire system — FERS annuity calculations, TSP withdrawal sequencing, FEHB retirement eligibility, FEGLI reduction schedules, special category provisions, and Social Security coordination for federal employees.
Advisors who earn the RFBS℠ don't just know more. They speak the language federal employees use every day — and federal employees notice.
The designation is awarded by the Registered Federal Benefits Specialist organization and is separate from FedEd Academy. FedEd Academy is the recognized educational pathway to sit for the designation examination.

Earn the designation
Use the RFBS℠ post-nominal in your marketing, on LinkedIn, and in your agency outreach. It signals credibility that a CFP® alone cannot convey in this market.
Why it matters
Federal employees are trained to notice credentials.
Federal employees work inside a credentialing system. GS pay grades, step increases, OPM forms, security clearance levels — they live in a world where qualifications and designations carry real weight. When an advisor walks in with the RFBS℠ designation, they recognize it as evidence of preparation.
More importantly, HR offices and federal employee associations look for credentialed advisors when making referrals and scheduling benefits workshops. The RFBS℠ opens doors that a general securities license or CFP® alone simply cannot.
Agency access
HR offices prefer to refer credentialed advisors for employee benefits workshops and retirement planning events.
Client trust
Federal employees understand that this designation means you studied their system specifically — not just general finance.
Referral network
Federal employees refer to each other constantly. One credentialed advisor in an agency can grow into an entire book from that agency.
“The RFBS℠ isn't just a credential. It's proof that you took the federal market seriously enough to study it.”
— K. Shawn McCoy, Founder, FedEd Academy™
